EcoDigify Hackathon Seminar Advances Sustainable Digitalization in Higher Education

The International Hellenic University actively participated in the EcoDigify Hackathon Seminar, held on October 8–9, 2025, at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice. The Seminar brought together 17 educators and researchers from Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Greece, to explore how higher education can drive Europe’s green and digital transition.

The EcoDigify – Embedding Digital Sustainability in Higher Education Curricula project, co-funded by the EU, aims to initiate a future-oriented interdisciplinary university program that will address the multidimensional challenges of promoting sustainability in the use and development of digital technologies. The consortium consists of the partners: Linköping University (Sweden) -led by Vivian Vimarlund, Stimmuli for Social Change (Greece), Erasmus University Rotterdam (Netherlands) -led by Dimitrios Vlachopoulos, Ca’ Foscari University (Italy) -led by Agostino Cortesi, and International Hellenic University (Greece)-led by Maria Drakaki.

The two-day event explored how Sustainable Digitalization (SD) can be effectively integrated into higher education teaching and learning. Participants attended a series of lectures, toolkits, and discussions on five key themes: the impact of digitalization, business practices for sustainability, green technologies and gender equality, educational practices across disciplines, and the Living Labs methodology. The seminar provided a collaborative space for exchanging knowledge, experiences, and good practices on embedding sustainability within university curricula. Through interactive sessions and a hands-on hackathon challenge, participants worked together to design creative solutions addressing real-world sustainability issues in education. The training modules offered practical insights, combining research, pedagogy, and innovation to strengthen the capacity of higher education institutions to lead the green and digital transition. The event concluded with a shared commitment among partners to continue developing open-access resources, teaching materials, and strategies that empower educators and students to co-create a more sustainable digital future for Europe.
