Materials Technology

Teaching Hours and Credit Allocation: 30 Hours, 6 Credits

Course Assessment: Exam & Coursework

The objective of this module is to provide students with the ability to make critical decisions on material selection in the design and manufacturing of new products. Material selection has multiple aims; minimise production cost, reduce weight, increase strength, while meeting minimum standards in product performance. This task may be one of the most demanding in practice since alternative available materials may present differentiations in performance over multiple and often mutually conflicting criteria.

In the framework of the module, students will study materials found in commonly used products, their properties, typical values and measurement details. Additionally, material selection will be also considered in relation to different manufacturing processes and how these can be interrelated. Furthermore, CES will be demonstrated as a material selection tool.
