Academics, Professionals, Organizations and Agencies at the 1st International Conference on Humanitarian Crisis Management (KRISIS 2023) of the International Hellenic University

The International Conference on Humanitarian Crisis Management (KRISIS 2023) took place at the premises of the International Hellenic University (IHU) in Thessaloniki, at the Thermi campus, on October 14-15. It has been organized by the Institute for the Management of Refugee Flows and Crises of the IHU Research Center.

Humanitarian crises are growing in numbers and impacts. In a global environment of continuing and new humanitarian crises, due to conflicts, disasters, climate change, and the pandemic, among others, the research, development and field experience for the management of the crises, as well as the contribution of all stakeholders are more than necessary. KRISIS 2023 brought together academics, professionals and practitioners working on humanitarian crisis management to present research, development, and field experience in all areas of interest to humanitarian crises. It was organized in English.

33 scientific papers were accepted, and 4 round tables were organized at the conference. It was attended by more than 90 participants, and more than 40 were physically present. The General Chair of KRISIS 2023, Professor of Humanitarian Engineering and Director of the IHU Institute for the Management of Refugee Flows and Crises, Dr. Maria Drakaki, delivered the opening speech. The vice-Rector of Academic Affairs and Quality Assurance of IHU, Professor, Dr. Panagiotis Tzionas, gave a speech at the opening ceremony. The Co-chair of KRISIS 2023, Associate Professor, Dr. Diego Vega, Director of the Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Research Institute (HUMLOG Institute), Hanken School of Economics, Finland, participated with physical presence. A keynote speech was delivered by the Dean of the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor of Medicine, Dr. Emmanouil Pikoulis, Director of the MSc in Global Health – Medicine of Disasters. The President of the Hellenic NARIC (DOATAP), Professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Dr. Orestis Kalogirou, participated in a round table on steps taken towards recognition and assessment of refugee qualifications lacking documentation in Greece.

At KRISIS 2023 were accepted papers and round tables from many different universities and a variety of academic departments, international organizations, including UNHCR Greece and IOM Greece, the Hellenic NARIC (DOATAP), the HUMLOG Institute of the Hanken School of Economics, as well as other agencies and stakeholders including the Greek military, FRONTEX, the Hellenic Police, and private business companies. Students of the interinstitutional MSc in Humanitarian Logistics and Crisis Management also contributed with papers.

At the closing ceremony of KRISIS 2023, the General Chair, Prof. Maria Drakaki and Co-chair Prof. Diego Vega, announced the next conference, KRISIS 2024, which will take place at the HUMLOG Institute, Hanken School of Economics.
