From Medieval Empires to Modern Nations: History, Ethnogenesis and State Formation in the Black Sea/Eastern Mediterranean Region

The course aims at offering the students an overview of the formation of the medieval empires, both sedentary (Byzantium, Caliphate, Ottoman Empire) and nomadic (Hunnic, Turkic and Mongolic) of these two regions, and describe their historical transition into the region’s early modern political reality. The student will become familiar with the role religion played historically as an overarching imperial ideology but also as a medium for the introduction of modern political currents, such as nationalism.
