Aims

The aim of this course is to provide an understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing organizations and how business executives can efficiently and effectively manage their organization and its operations. The course will aid you to develop your understanding of organisations and the functions of management and leadership, their scope and limitations, in different organisational contexts. The course provides not only concepts and theories but also some practical tools to help you develop your own potential as leaders and to embark on a life-long project of learning.

 

Learning Outcomes

During this course students will:

  • Understand the basic management functions and develop the capabilities required for undertaking managerial responsibilities and tasks
  • Familiarize themselves with contemporary developments and practices of management and explore their application to different organizations and business contexts
  • Gain the opportunity to analyze business problems and issues of managerial importance
  • Be encouraged to think in a more holistic fashion about the company and appreciate the importance of team work in successful organizations
  • Be exposed to the management principles that are essential for building long-term competitive differentiation and superior company performance.
  • Begin to develop a range of leadership skills that include conceptual, communication, reflective, social and emotional skills

  • Environmental, industry, and competitor analysis
  • external and internal factors that influence the firm’s operations, leading to a systematic SWOT analysis for the business unit
  • Types of competitive strategy that the company (should) pursue(s) to achieve positional advantage
  • Generation, evaluation and selection of appropriate business strategies
  • Key marketing, finance, accounting, R&D, MIS and allied organizational issues that are important for effective strategy implementation
  • Measurement and evaluation of performance results
  • The organisational context: structure and culture
