Agro/Industrial, marine and environmental Biotechnology

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of biotechnology in all areas of application. They will navigate through the different kinds of biotechnology and become aware of related scientific concepts such as Bioeconomy, which is used in international fora. More specifically, different topics will be covered such as (a) Industrial and Agricultural Biotechnology, where the students will become familiar with methodologies already applied in the production of certain biotechnological products as biopolymers, enzymes, bio/chemicals, food additives as well as vaccines, molecular biomarkers, genetic engineering, GMO’s etc. in agriculture. Also, they will become familiar with meanings such as Cell Factory, Systems and synthetic Biology, Biorefinery, Bioenergy, etc. (b) Environmental Biotechnology (bioremendation, waste treatment etc) (c) Marine Biotechnology.
